Hi there!! I wanted to take a minute to welcome you to my blog. I hope you will enjoy pondering thoughts and meanings of what God reveals in scripture with me.
Who Am I?
Random Facts:
- I am a wife and mom of one currently living in Blacksburg, Virginia
- I love tea! I have a dedicated tea cabinet in my home with over 40 different varieties. I try to limit caffeine so I favor greens and herbals.
- I have discovered in the last few years that I love to garden. No one is more surprised than I am, but it makes my mother-in-law immensely happy.
- I love all kinds of music. I sing, I play the violin, I play at the guitar. There is always a song in my head and often one word or phrase spoken by someone else will trigger an new song to start playing.
- I LOVE children!! I love children of all ages! That’s why I led preschool choir, taught 5th grade Sunday School, worked in the children’s program at BSF, and have 5 adopted college students. I told my husband that we may only have 1 birth child, but I have many adopted children.
If you find me on Twitter (@puregator), my one line bio says, “I’m a stay at home mom who loves Jesus.” This is truth! Although not necessarily in that order. I have had the absolute privilege of being a stay at home mom for the past 19 years. I left my full time job as a Medical Technologist to stay home with my adorable son. (Hey, I’m a mom! Of course my son is adorable!). I thought I would be incredibly bored at home with a baby after 10 years in hospitals and medical practices, but that turned out not to be so. I have enjoyed almost every moment.
As I watched my son grow, I found that there is something precious about every age. And yes, I still hold to that even now that he’s almost 20 and living on his own.
I’m married to a wonderful geek and have been for the last almost 23 years. He has brought out my “inner geek” making this blog possible. Together we often look for ways to use technology in and around the church in order to enhance worship and spiritual growth. In addition to his full time job, we also run a small Information Technology business. With his background in computer science, we can provide a large spectrum of services for our clients.
I am also a processor. I need to process what I’m learning in order to figure out how it applies to me and how I need to change. My desire is to be the person God created me to be. I have a long way to go so I process a lot! The way I process is through writing which leads to why I started this blog. For the last several years, I have written what are essentially blog posts about the things that God is teaching me, but except for my husband, no one besides me ever had the opportunity to read them. I have debated with myself about starting a blog but always ended the debate by deciding I was too busy. But a few years ago, Jeff Goins, a blogger and writer that I respect, declared a 21 day Intentional Blogging Challenge. During this challenge, he has offered helps, tips, and guides for building a better blog. It seemed to me as if God was saying now is the time. I will admit that this challenge will go beyond 21 days for me, but I am committed to doing each exercise as I am able and then continuing this blog.
I want this blog to be a ministry to each person who reads it. Each article that appears in this blog is me trying to process what I am learning about who God is and who He wants me to be. I am convinced that I cannot know God better if I don’t understand who he really is. I confess that I didn’t have the best or the godliest role models in my fathers (yes, I had a birth father and an adopted father) so my idea of who God is was pretty skewed from a young age. When I read things in the Bible that God says about me, I have often been surprised. For example:
Deuteronomy 7:6 (NIV)
6 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)
17 The Lord your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Sometimes I find it hard to imagine that the Holy God of the Universe calls me His “treasured possession” or that He takes great delight in me and rejoices over me with singing. If you are like me, you probably do too. Which is why I names this blog His Treasured Possessions. I want each of us to be reminded every time we come to this place that, as believers, that really is the way God sees us.
I’d like to invite you to join me on my journey as I learn and process. I look forward to sharing this journey with you. My goal is to post something at least once per week, but I ask that you be understanding and grace filled if there are times that I don’t meet that goal. If you like what you read, I’d appreciate it very much if you would follow me and tell your friends.
Blessings to each of you!
You have expanded on my thoughts from this morning. It is my choice whether or not I participate, such as the giving to the building of the tabernacle, but what I give is His choice- No Negotiation. It must be holy, acceptable. Our redemption is totally on His terms, after all He is God. I must be careful of who I change to please, and if I’m changing to align myself with someone else other than God then maybe I need to sacrifice that relationship, as painful as it appears, for it is God who is Sufficient. If He has prescribed “tough love” then so be it. My responsibility is to be submissive and humble to His will as I understand it. And, I love, love, love that I can pray for what is best for me knowing that in God’s sufficiency it is best for all concerned. He is not limited to either/or, He can and does use my suffering/circumstances to change others even as He is changing me.
Nancy, I had not made the connection between our discussion this morning and this. That is such a good application, thanks for pointing it out. I do hope and pray it doesn’t come to that kind of sacrifice, though.
